Hi Doc,

My child is 3 weeks old and is suffering from constipation. She was constipated for 4 days last week without anything coming out and i coud see that she was in real pain crying a lot. She is currently on Nan. Her Paed is out of town, could you please advise on what to give her to make her better.

I am worried because she seems like she' s in pain. Oh and at the hospital they said i must give her water+brown sugar. But it didnt help. even water + gripe water.

Thanx Doc...

I assume that you tried to breast feed your baby. It is probably the formula that is causing her constipation. Try her on Lactogen1 and see if her constipation improves. First help her to pass the constipated stool that is upsetting her by using just one infant glycerine suppository.

Water and brown sugar is nonsense, it didn' t help my baby either! Or even olive oil with her milk!

Give her Duphalac (about 2.5ml) immediately! It' s absolutely safe (I give my baby 3ml every day in the morning) as it is only a stool softener.

But the duphalac might take a while. Go to your nearest pharmacy and ask for ' Gliserine suppository' , this will help her immediately (within half an hour). She can' t be in so much pain, shame! Only use half the suppository.
