my 14 month old daughter suffers with constipation. i have given her Laxette and it helps to loosen the stool, but i have not wanted her body to rely on this. as soon as she is off the product her stool becomes hard and she suffers terribly when passing them. i had recently given her lacteol forte and she had up to 10 smelly and uncomfortable stool nappies leaving her bottom incredibly sore and inflammed. i feel at my wits end as her diet is good and she consumes water and is generally a healthy baby except for this. it is debilitating for her and she screams and goes red in the face when passing stool. help!

As you know from reading our parent's questions on this site, constipation is a very common problem indeed.
You say that your daughter has a good diet, but the main content of her diet must be plenty of fibre rich food, fruit and fluid. Do not give her constipating foods such as cheese of any kind.Use an infant Glycerine suppository once daily for two days to clear out the constipated stool. After 2 days commence Duphalac liquid 5ml twice daily. She should pass 2 or 3 stools day on the Duphalac. After 10 days reduce the Duphalac to once daily.
