Constant Cough

Hi Doctor, my baby is 10 months with a cough that just doesn''t want to go. He was on antibiotics and it did stop, thereafter returned. I gave him prospan cough syrup and it stopped and now I see its started again. He doesn''t cough all the time, its much more at night and in the mornings and it seems as if his chest is tight. He is at a daycare so he is prone to getting sick. I''m not sure what to do, pse advise...

You have given a good description of your baby's cough. He did not improve after being given antibiotics. You mention that he seems to have a tight chest. It is likely that he is showing the ealy signs of asthma. If he does have asthma effective treatment is available for this age group. Please take him to be seen by a paediatrician as it is important to make the correct diagnosis and start treament early. When you take him to the paediatrician ask him/her directly whether your child has asthma.
