constant abdominal pain

Good day,
My son is a almost 4 year old and reasonably healthy. For the past 5 months he is constant complaining about abdominal pain-more in the region of the epigastrium. I took him to a surgeon who made me feel like a worm and he said children of his age can''t localize pain and they wil always use abdominal pain as an escape. No xrays or blood work was done. And I was also told he is manipulating me

When I give him Medigel the pain subsides. I am at my last resort as I do not know what to do. It breaks ny heart if he wakes up in the middle of the night with abdominal.

Please tell me what to do as I no my tears is not helping. Our next follow up at his paediatrician is in december.

Thank you for your time

Abdominal pain in young children is always a problem. The main problem is to decide if this is a genuine complaint or if the pain is the child's way of manipupulating the situation to get out of soemthing unpleasant such as going to school. In the latter situation children usually only complain about the pain in the mornings and on schooldays. Your son appears to be complaining about his pain much more often and he is very specific about where he has this pain. Also an antacid [Medigel] relieves his pain. From his description it is possible that he may have a stomach or duodenal ulcer. This is not common in children but certainly can occur. This can be caused by a bacterial infection in the stomach or due to the use of certain medicines such as the pain medicine Nurofen [ibuprofen]. In view of the definite and persistent nature of your son's complaints it would be best to ask a paediatric gastroenterologist to see him.
