Concerned about eye

Hi Doc.
Last week Friday I noticed that my 6yr old daughters right eye was a bit red, from the inside corner of her right her up to iris. No itching or any discharge. On Monday it was much redder and it looked like there was a bit of slime on the side of the iris. I took her to ou GP and he indicated that it is an allergy, gave us eye drops (chorohexal or something like that) and a nasal spray as well as allergy medication. The slimy thing seems to have diminished but her eye is still very red. What could this be, should I rather take her to an eye specialist or keep her on this medication....thanking you in advance.

This sounds like an infection called 'pink eye' of your daughter's eye and is definitely not an allergic problem. The most likely cause is a virus infection known as adenovirus. Most children get this infection from another child or from a swimming pool. Pink eye usually lasts for at least 1 to 3 weeks before it clears up. No treatment is necessary and it will clear up by itself.Antibiotics tend to make the eye worse and should not be used, so stop the eye antibiotic eye drops given to your daughter.
