Colon Biopsy?

Dear Dr,

My baby girl , 9months, has been suffering with reflux and severe gas since birth. Everything and anything was tried, including Neocate as you once suggested. All kinds of medication, without relief. X-rays of her colon about a month ago came out fine. I just took her to the Paed again, as she is crurrently really battling with flatulence and very bad stomach cramps, which keeps her awake and crying all night. It' s almost like she has colic at 9 months. The paed now prescribed Creon capsules, of which I should give half in the morning, half in the evening for 14 days, and then go back. When I asked the next step, if I do go back, he said a Colon Biopsy. Cancer immediatly came to mind! I asked him why he suggested this, and he said that I should just not worry, and come back in 2 weeks. I' m now a wreck. Is colon biopsy only done to detect cancer, or could it be for any other reason. I am worried sick, and do not know what to expect. I hate not knowing what' s goin on, especially with my precious little one. If you would, please shed some light, however harsh it may be.

Much appreciated,

Please do not worry about cancer, she has not got cancer and that is not even being considered at her age. The doctor is concerned that your child may have a condition such as eosinophilic colitis [which is the condition I suggested that she may have following your question last time]. Also he may be looking for a condition such as coeliac disease which is due to gluten intolerance.
