Q.

Circumcision

My son is 10 months and needs to be circumcised. He was circumcised at birth but the procedure was not done properly. He now has a very loose foreskin as only the very tip was removed and it appears that the foreskin was retracted as you can push it back a little. I have a few questions and concerns:
How common is it for a circumcision to not be done properly?
Will anaesthesia be dangerous for a 10 month old baby (his weight is 10kgs)?
More or less what is the healing time frame?
What can I do to ensure the best healing and recovery?
Would the stitches be dissolving?
My instinct tells me I should add a few drops of savlon or dettol to his bath water and let him soak a little a few times a day. Use Weleda Weaping Wound Powder on the wound? Keep him as dry as possible and let the wound air wherever possible obviously ensuring the area is as clean as possible.
I do apologise for bombarding you with questions but my paediatrician is not very happy about the procedure and has made me feel very uncomfortable. I do know it is not the norm these days and it is cosmetic etc etc but I do feel I need to correct the problem as soon as possible. I am scared to leave it as is for too long.

Please see my answer above regarding your question about a urologist. You are correct. One always wants the best for your baby and a poorly performed circumcision is not acceptable. It is usually a relatively simple operation to correct the problems you mention here.Anaesthesia is not a problem as the urologist will work with a highly experienced anaesthetist. Circumcisions heal quickly especially in babies, usually within a few days. No stiches are usually needed. It will not be necessary to add Dettol to the bathwater, but you will be told all about keeping the wound clean.

Hey Anon, sorry your son has to get this done again. This is a HUGE problem in South Africa. Circumcisions are discouraged and not performed enough and so many doctors don' t know how to do them. I just came back from the US, where the majority of babies are circumcised and the problem there is less than 1 in 1000 because the doctors know how to do it right and painlessly. It should have been done right the first time, but the doc that circumcised your son did not remove enough of the foreskin because he has so little knowledge about it. As a nurse I have seen that way too often before. No wonder circumcision leaves such a bad taste in here in SA. Your son should heal very quickly. A little Vaseline on the circumcision line should help keep it off the nappy and prevent irritation. Your son will be much better off in the long run. There are so many medical and health benefits from having it done. I wish more parents would look at it from that point. Besides, it looks much better too. Good luck!
