Chronic cough - 4 year old

My son (turning 4 in Jan) has had a chronic, wet cough for a month now. He had pharyngitis and since then he has runny nose during the day but at night he battles to breathe it' s so blocked and wakes up and sits up to stop coughing. He coughes until he almost vomits. What is causing this and what can I give him?

Your son has got whooping cough. The cough usually lasts for about 3 months then clears up. If diagnsed in the first week when the cough starts then medicines are effective, but it is too late to use these medicines now. You can ask your chemist for Aterax syrup and give your son 5ml at night to stop the cough.
