Q.

Chocolate while breastfeeding

Dear Doc

I love eating chocolate! Is it ok to consume chocolate while breatfeeding my 13 week old daughter?

Lately she has been fighting my breast and drinking less - could it be linked to chocolate in my diet?

Many thanks

Chocolate does contain a nautral stimulant called theobromine which is similar to caffeine. You would have to eat a lot of chocolate for this to affect your baby. Having said this, you mention that your baby is a bit difficult lately so it may just be the chocolate that is affecting her. Stop eating chocolate for at least 48 hours and see if there is any change in your baby's behaviour. If she settles down then you know that chocolate does affect her.
