Q.

Chloral Hydrate for 18 month old

Hi Doc,

My son is 18 months old. He has had 3 seizure episodes in the past 4 months. the first he had a temp of 37.5 degrees. The second he had a fever of of 38.3 degrees and the 3rd he had a temp of 37.8 degrees. The doc has now suggested that we go for an EEG to check that all is well. My question is that he has prescribed Chloral Hydrate and I have googled it and not read anything positive! I had never heard of it before, but from what I can see it is normally prescribed as a sedative for insomnia. i would like to call the doc and ask him some questions, but quite honestly, would not know what to ask! Have you ever heard of this drug and its uses?

Thanks for always being available to assist.
regards

Chloral hydrate is indeed a very old sedative which you should not use for your baby. His seizure episodes appear to be due to high fever and are known as febrile seizures. It is imprortant to make a proper diagnosis here as your son has had 3 seizure episodes already. It is essential to do an EEG.
