Q.

child's late bedtime

hi Paed any suggestions on how to bring my 5 yr old's bedtime forward? Even tho I get her into bed at 8 she nods off around half nine or to ten, then struggles to get up b4 8am and its a rush in the mornings.

Should I try putting her to bed as early as 7pm? The thing is she is just someone who lies awake in bed for over an hour after getting there. I have also instilled in her a great love of books and this now seems to be working against me! If she's not read to, she will read herself. Or she wants to do quizzes in the dark (I ask her ten questions on any given topic and she must reply. She loves that). Or she wants to listen to a story on a cd.

Basically she more or less wants school activities at bedtime and sometimes even asks to colour pictures. How do I get her to totally wind down at least an hour earlier? I've tried dim lights and soft music but she just lies there very restless, twiddling her thumbs in the dark for an hour or more.

help!

This is very common with intelligent children. You should read to her before she goes to sleep evry night. Not very exciting books but happy soothing stories. When you have finished , kiss her goodnight, switch off her light and leave the room.
