Q.

Child Speech

Hi Doc, I am a bit worried about my little nephew. He is 2 yrs &  8 months &  he still can' t speak. He can only say mama &  still doesn' t understand a lot of things.
I know kids are not the same but mostly kids of almost 3 yrs can say an understandable sentence or can say their name.
His little cousin of 20 months can speak &  ask for water very clearly, she answers when you ask her name.
His mother doesn' t seem to be worried and has never asked for a doctor' s advice.
Is this normal, if not where what is the next step?

Your nephew is certainly slow with his speech, but this is very common indeed, especially with little boys. The first step is to be sure that he can hear properly, so his hearing needs to be checked. If this is normal give him another 4 months and if there is still no progress he will need to be seen by a speech therapist.
