child not interested in school

My 11 year old boy child is not doing well at school (Grade 5), his marks for all subjects are low.He does not make an effort to correct or learn anything new. He loves going to school and has friends and knows the teachers and is friendly to all. He is not bullied nor is he dyslexic. He was prescribed Ritalin and has used it (half a tablet in the morning and half at about 11 in the morning) for two school terms. There has been no change in behaviour nor a change in the quality of his school work. Its as though he was not taking any drugs. He is interested in other things though such as TV, computer games, playing with his friends. But with school he is not bothered that his marks are low. What could be happening with him? Haw can we raise the level of his interest in school. He is a middle child and his two sister are doing ok at school.

You have given an excellent account of your concerns with your son.It seems that your son is a happy, normal boy in all respects, yet does not show any interest in his schoolwork. He does have other interests and enjoys them. He certainly does not appear to fit the profile of a child with ADD or ADHD,so it is no surprise that he did not do well on Ritalin. Many school going children especially boys are late maturers and only seem to start showing an interest in and doing well at school when they are in their last year or two of school. It will be of benefit to your son to have him assessed by an educational psychologist at this stage.
