Changing routine back after illness

My son suffered from severe gastro for about a week. He lost a lot of weight in this time since he only had fluids.
When he would wake up during the night I would give him small amounts of fluid to drink then he would go back to sleep and after a while he would wake again and again we would give him fluids. He is over the gastro now but we struggle to get him back to his old sleeping routine. He used to sleep from 8pm to 7am without waking but now he wakes up about two times during the night and the only way to get him to sleep is to give him something to drink. Should we leave him to cry, or should we give him his bottle? I have no idea how to get him back to his old ways. He is 16 months old now.

Your son is rather old to be waking up twice at night for his bottle. He got used to this routine when he was ill and needed the extra fluids.Try and give him one bottle if he wakes up and then leave him to cry if he wakes up for the second one. He should soon fall back to sleep again. After a week or so cut the night bottle out completely.

Hi Jenn

I agree with Mamalove - please dont let little one cry. I cant stand it when my baby cries. My little boy also had gastro and was hospitalised for it. We also struggled for about 2 weeks after that to get him back to his routine. He also woke up at night for a bottle. He is now fine and sleeps through from 8:30- +- 7:00.

I know its frustrating and I know what you' re talking about, but just be patient - he will return to his old habits soon.

Good luck girl.

Please don' t leave your little one to cry. There is a reason why your baby cries and that is because he needs you. Before you know it he will be a big boy and won' t need you to comfort him in the night. you will never have that time with him again. Go to Dr Sears website, it has alot of useful information on babies waking in the night.
