Certain sounds sensetivity

Dear Doc

My 2 year old daughter is very much or I would say she is scared of certain sounds e.g. Hair dryer, food blender, vaccum cleaner and machines and even the sound of an earoplane. But she is fine if very loud music is playing. I''m really not sure what to make out of this? It has come to a point where she doesnt touch the hair dryer because she is scared it will make a noise and she will tell me she is scared of the hair dryer. Must I be concerned? She doesnt close her ears though when she hears those sounds, she would rather scream/cry and look for a place to hide and she would be terrified for a few minutes till I calm her down. What would this be?

This same question came up very recently. This is a relatively common problem among young children. This increased sensitivity to noises and loud sounds is known by the medical name of 'hyperacusis' If you enter 'hyperacusis' on Google you will be able to read a lot about this condition in children. It would be best to take your daughter to see an audiologist for tests.
