Q.

Can measles be confused with allergy?

Dear Doc

I had to pick up my little girl, 3 years old on tuesday from creche because they suspected that she might have measles. when i got to the clinic they told me she has an allergy and gave her allergex to take 3 times a day and a calamine lotion. I gave her allergex 1 teaspoon 3 times a day and yesterday she seemed much better and today she''s back at school. What confuses me now is that my nephew 5 years has the same symptoms and they said he has measles. Could there be an outbreak somewhere that you know of?

The measles rash can certainly closely resemble certain allergic rashes. Your little daughter's rash responded well to giving her an antihstamine, Allergex, so she probably did have an allergic rash. With measles the rash takes at least 5 days to clear up and children are always very ill with measles.I have not heard of any new measles outbreak.
