Q.

bronchopneumonia

Hi Doc,

My 2 year old boy was hospitilised 2 weeks ago with bronchopneumonia. He is fine during the day but at night between 12am and 5am he wakes up alot coughing, its not a phlemy cough, more like an irritation. but the coughing is disrupting his sleep. What can I give him to stop the coughing?

Paediatrician

You decribe your son's cough very well indeed. The most likely cause of his cough is the result of his recent pneumonia which was probably caused by a virus infection. His present problem is known as 'post-viral airway reactivity'. This usuallytakes quite a while to settle. It would be best to speak to your paediatrician and ask him/her to put your son on a medicine called Singulair for about 2 to 4 weeks.
