Good morning.

My LB is 5, he quite often takes a deep breath, holds it in for about 3 seconds and lets it out. I ask him why he does this and he says he cant breathe and this helps him. Now i dont know if it has just become habbit or if there could be something wrong. It does not sound as if he is battling to breath or that his chest is tight.

If your son appears to be well and does not have a tight chest, then his breath holding is probably a habit. This is different to the breath holding attacks seen in much younger children who do this when they get frustrated or when they get a fright. Your son is out of this age group. This can be a very difficult habit to stop and like all habits the more that you draw your son's attention to it, the longer he will carry on doing it.Some children who hold their breath like this do so when they are concentrating on something such as watching TV.Hopefully he will grow out of this habit quite soon, but I have come across a report of an adult who has had this habit all his life.
