Q.

Breastfeeding and malaria

We live in Zambia. I have a 6 month old baby and almost 4 year old son. Malaria is an everyday problem here and I would like to know if there is any medicine that I could use if I get infected. I am still breastfeeding and would like to continue untill my baby is 1 year old. Is there malaria medicine available that I can use while breastfeeding (which of course is not harmful to my baby) ??

Thank you!

If you get infected this will be a problem during both pregnancy and if you are going to breastfeed your baby. For treatment of malaria the usual advice is to use 'Malarone' or 'Fansidar' Even on these medicines it may not be ideal to continue breastfeeding as safety information is not adequate.
