breastfed baby poo

Hi Doc, my 4Week old son is exclusively breastfed. I had some trouble with latching and cracked nipples in the beginning and he spat up some blood from me. Now all is going well. He spat up some blood yesterday and I don''t think its from me as there are no problems with feeding anymore. His poo is a dark brown colour for the last day not the usual mustard colour. He had some jaundice that cleared at 2wks and is not excessively irritable. Is this poo colour normal?

It is most likely that your baby son's dark stools are due to blood that he has swallowed. The most likely source of this blood is a crack in your nipples with some bleeding while he is breastfeeding. If you are absolutely certain that your nipples are no longer cracked then you need to know where the blood you noticed your baby spitting up is coming from. For this reason it will then be best to ask your paediatrician to examine your baby.
