Q.

Breast development 9 years old

Hello Doctor,

My daughter is 9.5 years old and has started to develop breasts already. This began earlier this year with a hard lump under the nipple which first started on one side, and then the other. At that stage it was just the nipple raised and swollen but now it seems like a breast is forming (it looks like her nipple and breast area are swollen). Being a first time mum to a little girl I am not sure if this is normal, or if she should be checked out by our dr.

I have also found that she has put on a lot of weight quite suddenly as well this year. She has always been a small child but she has become very tall very fast (now even taller than some classmates that she was much smaller than earlier this year). I would not class her as overweight (she now weighs 30kg).

Do you suppose that this growth spurt is tying in with her puberty development. There are no other signs of puberty - no hairs or underarm sweating which my son started with very early.

The reason why I am quite concerned is that it is thought that daughters follow the pattern of their mum with puberty, but I was 13 when I began to menstruate and about 11/12 when my breast started to develop.

Thank you in advance,
Mummy

Your daughter is entering puberty even in the absence of other signs of this event. The onset of puberty is happening earlier in girls and the age of 9 and a half years is not regarded as early or 'precocious' puberty these days.

From one Mom to another, I know you are not the only one to have this happen in your 9.5 yr old. My daughter is now 10.5 and she developed the same last year. Weight has suddenly gone up (but she does have a lovely body) and shoe size, well, I cannot keep up - she is already a size 4 (I am only a size 5). I took her to the doctor and she advised me that there are so many girls even starting there periods at age 10 these days (hormones in our food ? am not sure), however I only pray that menstruation takes its time as I worry about the emotional and responsible aspect of it in my daughter (I was 12). I have been told by my doc that apparently they have to be at a certain weight as well before they begin menstration (45kgs or something). Lets see what the Paed says. Good luck to you.
