Blood rings on sclera

Hi Doc,
A little while back I noticed that my now 7 month old had what look like a flap of transparent skin on her the white of her eye, with a few blood vessels. This disappeared, but now she has another blood vessel which is running parallel to half of the iris, some of the blood vessels are now appearing on the iris itself. It doesn''t seem to bother her, but it is a huge concern. I will try to get her to an optamologist this week, but was wondering whether you would be able to provide me with some information in the mean time.

I cannot be sure about these blood vessels without being able to see your baby, but from your description this sounds like a condition called 'telangiectasia'. Dilatation of tiny capillary blood vessels occurs especially on the sclera or white of the eyes.As there is an inherited condition seen in infants called 'ataxia telangiectasia' it is essential to see an eye specialist. If required you may need to take your baby to see a paediatric neurologist.
