Blood in stools

Hi Dr, what can cause blood in a 10week old baby? The baby is already eating solids in the mornings end evenings. Can this be causing the problem?

Your baby is very young to be on solids. It is possible that your baby is passing a little blood due to a cow's milk allergy or due to an allergy to a cereal that your baby is eating. Another very common cause is that your baby may be constipated and when he/she passes a hard stool this can cause a tiny tear in the anus resulting in a small amount of bleeding. It would be best to ask your paediatrician to see your baby as it is necessary to find out why your baby is passing blood.

AS your baby doesn''t have the enzymes necessary for digesting anything other than milk, giving solids this early can cause tears in the stomach, this could well be why your baby is passing blood in the stool. Other things that can cause blood in the stool are cracked nipples, a tear in the anus (anal fissure), iron supplements, colic drops, certain home remedies. Definitely see your doctor.
