Q.

Behaviour problems

Hi Doc.....my little boy, aged 4 and a halve years old is struggling in Gr 00 at his school.....He has been assessed by OT and ST. His has huge language problems and major sensory issues! This whole week he has been very difficult in class.....being oppositional and getting into fights. I took him to a child psychiatrist few months ago, she said she thinks its SI and APD issues and wanted to put him onto Risperdal, just to calm him down a bit. I opposed this idea....Now we are having problems with the school...they already said he needs to repeat gr 00.... We are even considering remedial school, but then he needs to move! I am starting to see ADHD behaviour! What is your opinion on putting such a little child on such strong meds? Because at the moment he is getting plenty of negative feedback....struggling to learn....We are very worried about our little boy!

I agree that your son does seem to show signs of ADHD, but also certainly some signs of the Oppositional Defiant Disorder or ODD. He is certainly not a candidate for Ritalin at this stage and it may be best to try the Risperdal. He is really struggling at school and socially and really needs help. I would go along with the psychiatrist's recommendations at this stage.
