Q.

Baby with bad cough

Dear Prof

My baby of 4 and a half months has a bad cough. He is " chesty"  - it sounds like he has phlegm on his chest. His cough is particularly bad at night and in the early morning.

Is there anything that I can do for my baby to help him through this?

Also, what are the warning signs that there could be an infection that requires antibiotic treatment?

Many thanks

Paediatrician

Your baby sounds as if he has a virus chest infection known as bronchiolitis. I am a bit concerned that his cough is disturbing him at night. It would be best to ask your paediatrician to see him. Also keep his nose clear by using infant saline nose drops twice daily.
