Q.

Baby tired

My baby is 9 days old, he constantly has hiccups and 95% of the time he is asleep, he seems to be very tired. Should I be concerned?

Paediatrician

This can happen with some newborn baies but with your baby he seems to be drowsier than usual and it does seem to be going on for longer than usual as well. As babies can sometimes be very dowsy when they have an infection especially one caused by a bacteria called 'Strep B' it is best to ask a paediatrician to see your baby. It would be best to take him to an after hours paediatric unit with the long weekend coming up.

Babies under about 3 weeks old do just sleep and drink their milk and wee and pass stools. Its only after that when they begin waking for short times between feeds. Try to buy yourself a book like what to expect the first year. Its very useful with answering questions like this, and is written in a question and answer format and covers common questions for each momth.

Hi Mommy

Thanks for the response, it does make me to relax, his tiredness and hiccups really worried me, because the only time he wakes up is to have his bottle then he sleeps again, he feeds very well and he is constantly hungry, however my worry is that he doesnt spent time just awake unless if he wants to eat then he emmediately sleeps again,

HI BONGS

IM NOT A DOC BUT I HAD THE SAME ISSUE WITH MY BABY WHO IS NOW 4 1/2 MONTHS OLD. SHE CONSTANTLY HAD HICCUPS IN MY WOMB AND WHEN SHE WAS BORN SHE STRUGGLED WITH IT TOO. BUT SHE HAS GROWN OUT OF IT. I DID CHECK UP ON IT AND FOUND THAT SOME BABIES JUST DO HICCUP ALOT. AS FOR THE SLEEPING THING I WISH SHE SLEPT, SHE NOW DIDNT WANT TO SLEEP BECAUSE SHE MIGHT MISS SOMETHING, I DO HOWEVER HAVE A FRIEND WHOS BABY LITERALY SLEPT ALL THE TIME, HE EVEN SLEPT THROUGH HIS BATH!!!! AND IT WAS JUST THAT HE WAS A TIRED BABY.
SO DONT STRESS YOURSELF OUT BEING A MOMMY IS HARD ENOUGH WITHOUT THE EXTRA STRESS, AND IF IT WILL MAKE YOU FEEL BETTER HAVE HIM CHECHED OUT TO PUT YOURSELF AT EASE.

I HOPE THIS MIGHT HELP YOU
