Baby is male and female

A week ago one of the assistants at my children’ s school seemed very upset and she told me that her 5 month old baby was prem and that her baby was thought to be a boy, but was later told that her baby is male and female.

The urologist said that she should wait until her child is 8 years old, to observe her baby’ s growth in terms of play and interests to decide which sex to choose. Her options are limited when it comes to second opinions and information fas she cannot afford private care. Could you perhaps direct me to a few sites containing information on this topic so she can feel more at ease and informed? Or what is your opinion? Please help!

This is not an uncommon problem. It is a condition called 'intersex'. You can look it up on Google. Your assistant needs to take her baby to be seen at the paediatric endocrinology department of the nearest teaching hospital to where she lives.

The information provided does not constitute a diagnosis of your condition. You should consult a medical practitioner or other appropriate health care professional for a physical exmanication, diagnosis and formal advice. Are you saying that the baby has two organs?

Have a look at INTERSEX SOUTH AFRICA (, An organisation established to spread knowledge about intersex, to provide the space for the development of an intersexed voice in Southern Africa, and to combat discrimination on grounds of intersex.
