Q.

Baby in swimming pool for 45 minutes

My daughter has been taking her 6 month daughter with her for water aerobics classes once a week. The classes are for 45 minutes.
Baby sits in a ring. Is this safe for a 6 month old baby to stay in a heated, chlorinated pool for that length of time?
Your advice would be much appreciated.
Thank you.

This is a good question. The best advice that I can find comes from an Australian source. As you know the Australians are very keen on swimming,so their experience and advice should be good.It is recommended that babies under 1 year do not spend more than 30 minutes at a time in a heated swimming pool.

Its generally advised that babies not swim for longer than 15 minutes as they have a greater risk of hypothermia than adults. However, if the pool is heated and indoors, this time could probably be extended. I think though that 45 minutes is a bit long. Could your daughter not put her child in the gym creche?
