If you are giving your son regular tea it is probably all the caffeine in the tea that is keeping him awake. In any case this is a situation which simply cannot be allowed to continue. He can possibly have one bottle of milk at bedtime although he is a bit old for this now. After that it is nothing more even if you have to go through one or two nights of the controlled crying method.

Why do you give hime tea at night? Maybe he is hungry. Why don' t you give him some milk instead. Or maybe even give him some cereal to eat before he goes to bed. Very unusual for a child to be waking up at night for something to drink. It may also be time to wean him off that bottle. My daughter was this age when she went off the bottle and would only drink out of a cup. If you' re giving him normal tea, then he is probably just addicted to it by now and the caffeine is keeping him awake as well. Are you sure you' re not giving him supper too early? He could be getting hungry again. Try the cereal again in the evening. Not sure what you' re feeding him at this time. Try some weetbix. It is filling.
