babey language development

Hi.
i am a father of a 13month babey boy, i need to find out how important mother tongue is to the development of a child, we stay in gauteng but do not understand sotho/setswana but speak xhosa and the only child-minder we can find does not speak xhosa but sotho so we communicate with her in english, how is this going to effect our child?
