Q.

Asthma

Good morning Dr

My son has low iron and is being treated with Ferrimed for that. He also developed a terrible chesty cough which he had for a few weeks. My pead treated him with Singulair Sprinkles and Deselex. After a month (he seemed better) the paed changed him onto Deselx and Asthavent. Deselex 2.5ml at night and Asthavent 2.5 ml three times a day. The thing is he oftern gets a stuffy/snotty nose which then causes more coughing and then ear infection. I treat the nose with vibrocil in order to avoid an ear infection. last night was terrible, he coughed terribly and sounded like he could not breath, made a strange noise when breathing in.

Is he on the right treatment. I am doin the vibrocil 3 times a day for 5 days. How long before i can give it to him again as he has a snotty nose almost every second week - and so the cycle goes again.

I do not like you to use Vibrocil which contains a decongestant which may cause rebound rhinitis. This means that you may worsen the nasal blockage with prolonged use. Only use saline nose drops such as Salex twice day every day for several months and see if he gets better. If he does not improve it is time to see an ENT specialist about his persistently blocked nose. He probably has enlarged and infected adenoids.
