Antibiotic use while breatfeeding

Dear Doc

I have a terrible flu that I cannot shake off. I have been sick for about a month now.

My GP prescribed Augmentin BD (5 day course) about 3 weeks ago. I felt a slight improvement, but then deteriorated a few days after the Augmentin course was completed. The flu has now moved from my throat to my chest.

I went back to my GP on Saturday, has has now given me a 7 day course of Orelox.

My GP knows that I am exclusively breastfeeding my 4 month old baby. My question is, what impact will my antibiotic use have on my baby?

The GP has prescribed interflora for me on both occasions. Should I be giving my baby retuerina drops while I am taking the antibiotics, or is it not necessary?

Thank you

Very small amounts of both of these antibiotics will pass into your breastmilk. These amounts are not regarded as significant and should not cause a problem for your baby. It is a good idea to put your baby on Reuterina drops once daily while you are taking the antibiotic and for 2 days after you complete the antibiotic. Interflora will not be of benefit to your baby while you are on the antibiotic and the Reuterina is a much better idea.
