Anti-Malaria Meds

Hi Doc

Our LO is 16 months old and we''re off to Sabie for a long weekend...

We have received contradictory information as to whether it''s a malaria zone as well as being warned that he is to young for anti-malaria meds although the pharmacist showed us a product suitable from 12 months of age...

We have already decided that we won''t be taking the meds and would rather take precautions to not get bitten due to the side effects and everyone telling us the meds mask the symptoms of malaria...

However I really don''t want to take a risk with my son... what would you recommend?

We''ll be in a hotel and will not be camping... Tabard and Peaceful Sleep have warnings that their products should not be used on young children as there is a risk of hydroenceapholy (sp?).

What products would you recommend?

Ta muchly

Sabie is regarded as being malaria free so there is no real concern about going there. There are no safe antimalarials for this age group so the WHO recommendation is that children under 8 years not be taken into known malarial area.Just to be on the safe side take precautions not to get bitten by mosquitoes. You can use Peaceful Sleep anti-mosquito pads which are placed in special heating devices at night in your bedroom as a precaution.
