Another question

Hi Professor,

I asked in a previous post if I could give my 9 month old Flemeze and you wrote that I should not. You also wrote that Flemeze and Mucospect are similar medicines. You have advised me previously that I can give my baby Mucospect, so I am confused as to why I cannot give Flemeze, if it is a similar medicine.

I apologize for asking again, but I just want to be sure.

Thank you.

This is because your baby has suspected bronchiolitis which is an inflammation of the lining of the small airways [bronchioli] in his lungs. This inflammation is caused by a virus infection [usually RS virus] resulting in a temporary narrowing of these small airways. This illness usually lasts about 10 days but coughing can continue for up to 3 weeks. Mucolytics such as Mucospect have not been shown to be helpful in treating bronchiolitis.
