almost 5 years old - bedwetting

Dear Doc

My eldest will be turning 5 in October and he still isn''t dry at night. He manages about 5 nights and then has a relapse. Our routine is as follows: limit drinks from 5 till bedtime (20h00), visit loo just before going to bed, dad takes him for a wee at about 22h00 (puts on diaper), sometimes he visits the loo in the early morning hours (most nights). Then suddenly he''ll wet the bed before 22h00, and then again his diaper during the early morning. He''ll wee right through the diaper. The relapse can last about 3 nights. Then he might have a whole dry week, before relapsing again. We use motivation and insentive to get him to sleep dry, never scolding him or saying negative things. He is progressing, although very slowly. When should we be seeking help? My husband did mention that he thought the relapses occured when we as parents had an argument? Could it be that? What is our next step?

Your son has made good progress but still has nights when he slips up. This is despite your very good attempts to help him to stop bedwetting. It is unlikely that he is reacting to anything happening in the home. Bedwetting is a common problem and is known as 'enuresis'. He is now at the right age to start treatment which is very effective. So take him to see your paediatrician.
