Q.

Aids in children

My 1 rear old niece has been ill for at least 3 weekswith a rash,
weight los,and recurring bouts of flu-like symptoms,vomiting
and diarrhoea. Her paediatrician prescribed several courses of antibiotics, and is now treating her for t.b.,as it turns out that my
nephew' s maid has t.b.What is really disturbing, though,is that
their previous maid had full blown aids, and died a few days
ago.Is it possible that my niece could have contracted Aids
through contact with her?.I am especially worried because the
paediatrician has not yet been informed of this fact.

It is highly unlikely that your niece has contracted AIDs, but she has developed TB. She is already being treated for TB. Just to be on the safe side and again I stress that it is very unlikely, the Paediatrician should test your niece's HIV status.
