Q.

Adopted kid and illness

Dr, I know this might be a sensitive question, but over the years that you have been in practice, could you find any correlation between adoptive kids being more reseptive to illness, allergies, ect? My 2 children both has allergies and is SO often sick, sometimes every MONTH!! I was wondering if this is just by chance or could the poorer invitro care had an effect on their immune systems?

This is an excellent question. Allergies are inherited. The ante-natal care that your adopted children had would not affect the inheritence of their tendency to be allergic. One or other or even all of the natural parents of your adopted children must be allergy sufferers. Often this is not mentioned in the adoption papers. The tendency of your children to pick up infections so easily may be due to a temporary immunoglobulin deficiency. It would be worthwhile asking your doctor to check your children's IgA, IgG and IgG subclass levels.

My 2 adopted children also have a weak immune system. I think it is related to there living conditions prior to becoming part of our family and the fact that their Mother was on TIK.
