Q.

acidic stool

Dear Prof

I wrote to you earlier this week re my 1 yo son who is struggling with loose stool. He has been off wheat for 4 days now, but there is only slight improvement. His stoll is still runny, very large, and so acidic that it burns his bum almost instantly. What could be the cause if it is not wheat intolerance? He is now 13.5 months old and weighs 10.5 kg, has just started walking and is happy otherwise.

A common cause of this is too much fructose in the diet. Fructose is the natural sugar in fruit.Try cutting all fruit and especially fruit juices from your baby's diet. Fruit juice avoidance is for the long term if he is better on a fructose free diet. He will be able to have some apple or pear but not the juice and only after at least 2 weeks on a fruit free diet.
