9-yr old &  heels

Hello Dr,

My 9 yr old son complains all the time that his heels are sore. Is this growing pains or should I have it checked out. If so, do I see a podiatrist or a paediatrician?

Thanking you in advance.

Your son's problem is almost certainly a condition called 'Severs disease' This is a painful condition of the heel bones and the tendon attached to them, the Achilles tendon. It occurs mainly in active children usually boys of your son's age and older. The usual treatment is known as RICE: rest, ice, compression and elevation. Ice is usually very helpful. Your son will probably need special heel cups as supports.Special exercises are usually advised. With time it clears up.It is best to see a podiatrist about this.

I live in Harrismith. Where can I source heel cups for my daughter? All the symptoms point directly to Severs Desease
