9 year old has pain in intestines

My son is 9.

He suffered from encopresis from age 5-7 but is much better the last 2 years after therapy,

However the last month he has been complained on and off about a pain in his lower abdomen on the left side.

He says it feels heavy and like someone is pinching him, its lasts about 2-3 minutes and is gone again.

He is regular and its normal so any suggestions as to what this can be? Normal cramps or should I rather have him checked out?

(medical aid is depleted so I dont want to go if its not too serious)

It is always difficult to be sure about the cause of a pain such as your son has without being able to examine him.You mention that he is regular these days which is important. When children complain about a pain as often as your son does we should take notice of his complaint. In this region of the abdomen it is usually a problem in the colon that is the cause of the pain. Things to think about are irritable bowel syndrome and inflammatory conditions of the colon. Your son is not constipated, but constipation is probably the most common cause of this kind of pain. I don't think that you should wait before taking him to see a doctor.
