8 week old

My baby girl had a cold at 3 weeks of age - stuffy nose and sore throat. She is now 8 weeks old and still has lots of mucus. It collects in her throat and mouth until she coughs or vomits and when she drinks, her nose blocks up. She is on Nan 1. We put her in a chair to sleep so that she can breathe more easily. How long is this likely to continue and how can I help her?

I am a bit concerned as to whether your baby has been correctly diagnosed It is unusual for such a young baby to catch a cold although this can happen. If her cough is bad and she is having difficulty in breathing it is important to exclude whooping cough. There is a lot of whooping cough around at present and babies who have not been immunised against whooping cough as yet are very susceptible to this illness.Another possibility is that she has a milk allergy problem rather than a cold.Use infant saline nose drops twice daily and try her on NAN HA1 instead of the regular NAN 1. If her nose clears up then she probably is an allergic baby. If not it would be best to ask your paediatrician to see her.
