8 moth old baby with phlegmy cough

My LG is 8 months old today. on the 3/11 I took her to the pead, the doc wanted to admit her in hospital because of her wheezing chest, and fever etc.....

But she gave me the meds first and said that if baby is not well after the follow up checkup 3 days later she would admit my baby to hospital. She prescribed, AmoxycilinSF4ml 3x a day, prelone 5ml once a day, singulair 1 sachet in morning over poridge and berotec and flemeze mixture 1,5ml 3x a day. All this was taken over a period of 5 days. The pead did the checkup and was pleased with babies progress.

So she finished her meds on the 7/11. by sunday night she sarted with a runny nose again and by tuesday she started coughing again. Wed night her pead gave a verbal prescription to the pharmacist. Singulair sachets for 7 days and berotec and flemeze mixture. She has been taking this since wed to date.

baby is still coughing. The pead did not give a probiotic, (i' m not sure if this is necessary). Her stools are very loose and slimy in the mornings after she eats her poridge. But its only 2 nappies, after that her stools are normal............

She is eating well, and she drinks her NAN HA during the day, at night she breastfeeds and bottle feeds. She drinks rooibos tea during the day as well.

Please give me some advice, because I feel as if I' m hitting a dead end now and I don' t know if I should take my baby to another pead??

It is almost certain that your baby had a viral chest infection called bronchiolitiis. This is usually due to the RS virus. The illness usually lasts for 14 days to 21 days and the cough may go on even longer. Antibiotics do not help at all as the illness is caused by a virus and not bacteria. All one gets is the side effects from antibiotics as you have here with your baby's loose stools. Give her a probiotic and stop the Flemeze which also may cause loose stools. The Berotec will make your baby rather active and possibly a bit 'jittery' and will not help the cough either, so it can also be stopped. Your baby will get better by herself.

Doc thanks for the advice.

Trixie  I also suspect teething. This all started when she cut her 1st tooth. She now has 2 teeth within a week and is cutting another one.

So I will stop the meds as the doc advised and see what happens next.

I think your baby is getting teeth!! My boys ( 4 years ) and 9 months both had a very phlemy chest when they got teeth. my baby is currently cutting about 4 teeth and he also has a phlegmy chest. took baby to the doc cause he was feverish but doc said he couldn' t see any infections etc in the ears or anything else only the sore, red gums and you can see the teeth are coming and this is accompanied by the phlegmy chest. gave me ped mucospect to give to baby 3 x a day ( only 1ml) as he doesn' t want something to block his chest etc. That' s what i think...
