Q.

7 yr old hand twitching

My 7 yr old daughter has developed a strange habit of moving her hand constantly. It looks like she''s using an adding machine and her little finger is constantly moving around. She does this all day, mostly her right hand, but if that one is occupied, then her left hand. She has moved her fingers around from being a baby, but never all the time. In the last 2 weeks it''s become a constant thing, even when she lies in bed at night going to sleep, when she walks around, talks to you or even when she eats. Should I have this checked out??? Seems quite strange.
Thank you

This sounds like a habit which is one of the so-called 'self-soothing' habits. If the teacher has not remarked on it don't be too concerned yet. Try'your best to ignore these hand movements of hers, easier said than done, but it helps not to draw attention to a habit like this. Give her time and if she is still doing this in 3 month's time it would be best to take her to see a child psychologist for advice.
