Good day,

When my son was born &  stil in hospital he was sneezing &  coughing &  was also very cloged in his nose. I spoke to the ped and he said its normal. He still has the same problem and is now 7 weeks. I have since taken him bak for another check up &  I was told he is fine. I am however worried about his cough as it sounds chesty but my ped is saying there is nothing wrong with him. It sounds sore when he coughs.

Please advise me.

Your baby should definitely not be coughing at all at his age and if this started soon after birth a great deal of notice should be taken of this problem. There are certain conditions where babies will cough from birth such as cystic fibrosis, inco-ordinated swallowing and also a condition called tracheo-oesophageal fistula. You need to get a second opinion on your baby's cough as soon as possible. Please try and see a paediatric pulmonologist. There are experts in all the main centres in SA. Please let me know about the result.
