I would like to know, HOW normal or NOT NORMAL is it if my 6 week old boy only sleeps about 6 hours during the day?? He doesn''t scream when he is awake, its only he doesn''t want to sleep!! at all!!! we have tried everything that we can think off, put him in the car, walking with him in his pram, but nothing as soon as the car/pram stops, he is awaike!!

Your baby should be sleeping more at this stage. He does not appear to be hungry as he would cry. It is possible that he has some reflux which is very common at his age. This often keeps babies awake. It would be a good idea to ask your paediatrician to see him.

Try to get hold of a good book on sleep.

Although we all think babies should sleep all the time, at around 6 weeks they do seem to cat nap rather than sleep and over the next few weeks, this changes into longer sleeps. There is a good south african book on sleep written by someone in Stellenbosch or Somerset West called Erica and her surname starts with an N, but I can''t remember what her surname is that I found really useful for me and I remember it talking about this.

IF your child is happily awake I wouldn''t worry too much though and it will come right with time.

Make sure you keep things dark and calm at night though so baby starts to understand the difference between night and day.

If mom is breastfeeding, make sure she''s not having caffiene as this can keep some babies awake (chocolate, coke, coffee and tea all have varying amounts).

Hi sounds normal to me - our eldest also slept very little (during the day) from about 2 weeks old - he catnapped during the day (at the longest maybe 1/2 hour naps at a time. And he only slept through at 14 months at night. We also thought something was wrong - because all the books and articles we read before the birth spoke about this " sleep, drink, sleep, drink"  routine they should have while still young. I think it depends on their temperament. I was very very tired in this period - but it does pass. Good luck! Enjoy him - They grow up very (too) fast!!!
