Q.

5month old - how much milk and/or solids

Hi Doc

Our baby girl is 5 months old and is only drinking breast milk

I have 2 questions that i would like your input on
1) Hoqw much milk should she have per day? My wife express the milk and she drink out of a bottle

2) Can we start giving her solids and if so how much and what can we give her? I''ve heard of the rice cereal - is that it that she can eat for now?

Your baby needs 140ml of milk for very kilogram she weighs per day eg 7kg x 140ml =980ml
You can give solids now starting off with a rice cereal.

At this age, breastfeeding on demand will provide everything that your baby needs.
As the milk is being given by bottle, ensure that the creche or nanny doesn''t force your child to finish the bottle, but takes it out when she starts pushing the teat out with her tongue.

At 6 months you can slowly start introducing fruit and vegetables and she will naturally start reducing her milk intake.
