5 year old wetting pants and bed

Hi Doc
my 5 and half year old has this ongoing habit or problem regarding going to the loo. He will wet his pants at least once a day and sometimes he wets the bed. it has been an ongoing thing and to be quite honest i am exhausted by it. We wake him up to go to the loo, we have tried the no drinking after 6pm rule, i sort of understand the bedwetting thing but how can he wet his pants during the day? On the odd occassion he is very good and doesnt wet himself and then the next day he does it,i have asked him and he cannot give him an answer as to why he does it. he did have a hernia op about a year ago and we are wandering if a mistake couldve happened, but our GP has assured us that the surgeon goes nowhere near there, my question is do you think he cant feel his bladder getting full, has he lost sensation. When he needs a number 2 he goes with no problem and has never really made an oopsie in his pants with the number 2.I need to put an end to this and i am not sure where to go or what to do as i myself dont understand what is going on. Your help will be greatly appreciated.

Do not be too hard on your son.His bedwetting problem is very common in children of this age and is called 'enuresis'. You are correct,he may not actually appreciate that his bladder is full most of the time or he may have immature bladder control. He is now old enough to be treated for his enuresis, so please take him to see his paediatrician. There are many successful treatments available to treat children with enuresis.
