5 Month Baby / Castor Oil

Hi - my Goddaughter in the Seychelles who will be 5 months old on 31st August had her third Vaccination (not sure which one) on Monday and from Monday evening until yesterday late afternoon had a fever that ranged between 38 - 40 degrees. The Nurse advised my sister-in-law to give her Panado Syrup as well as put a cool, wet face cloth on her forehead and let her sleep in the air-con which helped and the fever now seems to have subsided. She was also irritable and cried a bit when trying to breast feed which made them think that she could also be starting to teethe. The Nurse recommended she rub a little Castor Oil on her gums which I thought would not be good for a 5 month old baby as well as possibly preventing her stomach being able to digest the milk properly and maybe also give her loose stools. Your advise on all of the above would be appreciated. Thank-you.

It is fairly common for some babies to have a temperature of 38-39 degrees after an immunisation. This usually lasts for about 48 hours and the best treatment is Panado syrup.Do not use castor oil on her gums for teething as this is a real irritant to the gums besides possibly causing the other side effects you mention.A teething gel such as Pansoral gel is very effective if needed.
