Q.

5 day fever

Hi Doc,

My LO (3 years old) has had a fever since Friday morning. He has a runny nose, and is vomiting up flem. We took him to the doc on Sunday who gave him a nasal spay and Zithromax. I am just concerned that he is still eating poorly and the fever is still quite high. After his last sleep this afternoon it was 39.5.

We are actually away in the Drakensburg now…  do you think it is just a virus and lots of bed rest is all that is needed, or should we head back to JHB to get the doc to look again?

Thx

I am not at all happy that you are still on holiday with your son with such a high fever for 5 days. You do not have a clear diagnosis here.Your son is ill,not eating and is vomiting phlegm. He may have an illness such as pneumonia. Please have him seen by your paediatrician. Do not leave the paediatrician's rooms until you know exactly what illness your son has [a definite diagnosis] and what treatment is needed to make him well again.
