Q.

4month bany with persistent cough

Deasr Prof,
My baby has this constant cough for 6 days, The paed gave him nasal spray and prospan - 1.2ml 3x day. I have also been giving him sister Liliian mucocare. His snotty nose is now no longer as runny but thicker and gray yellow in colour.

He is not drinking that well and the cough is keeping us all up at night. He is so tired, but hardly sleep day and night.
Is there anything else I can give him for the cough as the prospan is not doing much. His cough is loud and dry and I am afraid that it may change to a chest infection and then he will need antibiotics...
Thanks!

Your baby started off with a cold which has now infected his chest as well causing an illness called bronchiolitis. The most likely cause is a virus infection called RS virus which is very catchy. The main thing you need to do is to keep his nose clear by using infant saline nose drops twice daily and by sucking out excess mucous from his nose with a mucous extractor.Ask you pharmacist for a nasal mucous extractor for babies.Cough mixtures will not help here.It is important that he can feed normally and can sleep so keep his nose as open as possible. If his cough worsens or if he canot feed properly he must be seen by his paediatrician.
